Upon graduating from Texas Chiropractic College in 1938, Dr. Oliver Smith Sr. opened his practice in Downtown El Paso, Texas.
When WWII broke out, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he flew C-46’s and 47’s over the Pacific Ocean. Upon the end of the war, he returned to his family in El Paso and reopened his practice in the Downtown area.
Chiropractic was not as widely accepted in the 1940s. As a result, he had very few patients. People would say they did not believe in Chiropractors. His answer was always “you do not have to believe in Chiropractic to come to my office, you just have to let me treat you and will become a believer.”
A turning point in his practice came when one day when he was talking to a janitor in his building who had been significantly injured in a car accident many years earlier. Dr. Smith listened to the man and said he could possibly help him. The gentleman expressed his appreciation but had no money to pay him. Dr. Smith said he would still be happy to try to help him, and if he improves, his payment would be to tell others how much better he was. Dr. Smith worked on the janitor and in a relatively short period of time he was pain-free and greatly appreciative.
The janitor remembered what Dr. Smith had told him and began to tell others how much he had been helped. One Monday morning Dr. Smith stepped out of the elevator where his office was located to find a line of people. At first, he thought they were there for another business until he realized they were lined up in front of his door. He remained blessed helping thousands of patients regaining their health through his 50 plus years in practice. Dr. Oliver Smith Jr. and III are proud to continue that tradition.
